Canada prioritizes family reunification. Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their dependent children to become permanent residents.
Who is a Dependent Child?
A child is considered a dependent if they meet BOTH of these requirements:
- They are under 22 years old.
- They do not have a spouse or common-law partner.
Children 22 years old or older qualify as dependents only if they:
- Have depended on their parents for financial support since before the age of 22, AND
- Are unable to financially support themselves because of a mental or physical condition.
Sponsor Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Prove you are not receiving social assistance (except for disability).
- Sign an undertaking to provide for the child’s basic needs for 10 years, or until they turn 25, whichever comes first.
